10 Steps To Acquire A New Skill
Acquiring a new skill can be intriguing and overwhelming. It requires a lot of commitment, time, and patience.
Despite the above fact, learning a new skill boosts your horizon and opportunities for career development and expertise.
Early this year I got determined to get a lot better and invest in self-development. It was a big decision for me although I was confused about the steps to take. This led to procrastination. I watched the first three weeks pass, yet I have not done anything. I had to take the bull by the horn.
According to Marshall McLuhan, the world is becoming a global village, and acquiring skills are becoming more important in the 21st-century labor market.
These ten steps will help you in acquiring a new skill:
1) DETERMINE THE RIGHT SKILL FOR YOU: You need to pick a skill that is relevant to you. Choose a skill that is aligned with your set goals.
2)DEFINE YOUR LEARNING AIM:
When you choose a skill, you need to map out what you want to achieve or learn.
3) FIX DURATION AND DEADLINE:
You have to determine the duration of the skill acquisition and put time-bound to be serious with it.
4) DO A REVIEW/RESEARCH ON THE SKILL: You need knowledge of what you want to venture into, hence you need this.
5) ENROLL: Get enrolled in an institute, YouTube class, or whatever platform you choose to learn with.
6) GET A MENTOR/INSTRUCTOR: Get someone who will guide you through the learning process.
7)BREAK THE SKILL: Break the skill into your area of specialization.
E.g: If you want to learn tailoring skills, you have to choose to focus on men's clothes or women's cloth.
If you choose men's cloth, you will narrow it down to English wears, native wears, t.shirts, etc.
It will help you learn quickly.
8)SET MEASURING SYSTEM:
Carve out a strategy to measure your progress and effectiveness in skill acquisition.
Set short term goals and checkmate your progress
9) PRACTICE ALWAYS: Whatever you do consistently, will not only give you results but also mastery. The more you practice, the more you get better.
10) JOIN A COMMUNITY: Join a community of other people with the same skill. You grow more when you learn alongside other people.
The world labor market has prioritized skills over paper certificates. If you find it difficult in acquiring a new skill, you can get started with the above 10 steps.
